With the huge success of Deafheaven with their ability to take the ugliest music genre in the popular’s mind perception into something as sensible and meditative as Shoegazing and hints of post-rock many hipster millennials jumped on the bandwagon to make Post-Black Metal/Blackgaze/Post-Rock-Black Metal into one of the biggest shitloads of trend and legions of lovers/haters. Sure it is a bastardization of the ‘’purest’’ and ‘’trvest’’ form of Black Metal,  almost no tongue in cheek here, but every music has the right to exist and even the worst genre can have hints of genius and produce once in a while a great album.

As everyone’s getting tired of Blackgaze, and West Coast Black Metal of the likes of Wolves In The Throne Room and Panopticon, East Coasters of Krallice are calling it their most prolific era with another record coming up in December, a little known band from Cambridge, England, Terra are following the experimental path of the later band. It is not a surprise that the record was mastered by Colin Marston (Krallice, Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Behold… The Arctopus, Byla) and goes beyond lo-fi Black Metal with elements of Drone and Post-Rock.

The outfit of Godspeed You! Black Emperor has never hidden its allegiance to their positions, politics, or views on the world. However, the post-rock group never really caressed the desire to break into mainstream or the music business. Without any announces their most recent releases ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend Ascend! and Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress were good records but not groundbreaking as Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM – Celestial Lineage (2011)

Le Black Metal américain est peu connu, cependant les groups ayant été en mesure de se démarquer ont su apporter des éléments les rendant incontournables. Wolves In the Throne Room de l’état de Washington est un band qui se veut “écologique” et très inspiré de l’attitude musicale de Neurosis. J’ai découvert cet album par Ed Howard sur son blogue Only the Cinema.

Ce band est composé d’un duo des frères Weaver, Aaron et Nathan. Avec Celestial Linage, ils concluent une trilogie. Ce qui les démarque c’est l’utilisation d’éléments post-rock et de synthétiseurs. C’est un album très sombre et qui explore la face caché de l’humain. Les textures sont très intéressantes et superbement maitrisées. Pour de nombreuses raisons c’est un album qui caractérise la solitude, la méditation et la misanthropie. L’approche Neurosis apporte un élément très intéressant au Black Metal ainsi que les « guest vocals » de Aaron Turner de Isis sur la pièce Subterranean Initiation apporte un angle différent au style Black traditionnellement hermétique. Un incontournable de 2011.
