Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet and Other

The outfit of
Godspeed You! Black Emperor has
never hidden its
allegiance to their positions, politics, or views on the world. However,
the post-rock group never really caressed the desire to break into mainstream
or the music business. Without any announces their most recent releases ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend Ascend! and Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress were
good records but not groundbreaking as Lift
Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.
With their latest album, GY!BE have made a simplistic post-rock while pretty efficient record that doesn’t disappoint but is far from their best experiments in music. To be honest, the song Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’ is one of the best songs of the year. But, the rest of the album can’t hold really well the quality of the ten minutes emotional outburst of it. The rest is average GY!BE, even if their is better than the excellent of most bands out there.
As far as I
know, drone music can be hermetic to some but Godspeed maintain a level of
quality that not only the compositions are still outstanding but the music speaks
with such depth and this without a single lyric.
