Old Forest – Dagian (2016, Avantgarde Music)

Named after the Old Forest of the œuvre of J.R.R. Tolkien, just as many other Black metal projets, British cult band Old Forest is making melodic metal with the Black metal spirit while keeping the atmospheric element as the central aspect of their new release Dagian.

The four titles on Dagian have a nice contemporary feel that will be an adequate pairing with Tribulation’s The Children of the Night and Obsequiae’s Aria of Vernal Tombs. With omnipresent keyboards and multiple effects, Dagian unfolds as a slow but easily flowing piece of music that transcends genre and time. It might even be a bit meditative and reflective in its way of repetitivity and gazing effect.

It is a record that keeps getting better with subsequent listens and will solidify Old Forest’s cult status. Not only as a Black metal act but also as a complete and a must of 2016.
