DROUGHT - Rudra Bhakti [EP]

Drought - Rudra Bhakti (2016, Avantgarde Music)

Another mysterious Black Metal act that doesn’t even inform of its provenance. Revolving around themes of the Übermensch and the purification with fire and the metaphor of the warrior, Drought are playing a kind of Black Metal that comes close to its purity. Read here : something like DarkThrone’s Soulside Journey or Immortal’s Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism. A Black Metal that is very close to Death Metal.

Rudra Bhakti is an effective EP that presents this Oriental inspired band with elements of South Asian metaphysics. The four songs on this record are playing like a coherent and monochromatic ensemble. Without going for hours, the lenght and editing is done with the right balance of ideas. I, however, thjink this might not be the most interesting four song EP. The structures of the songs are a bit conformist to the genre and except the inclusion of South Eastern sonorities this is far from being groundbreaking as it wants to be.

The production is raw and there is a warmth in it and it does work for me. But the four songs didn’t make me wanting for more that much. It doesn’t serve any surprises or curveballs and this is what was the most saddening. I wanted to like this so much but I think it didn’t connect with me. Maybe next time Drought.
