ABSOLUTUS - Pugnare in iis quae obtinere non possis

Coming out of Belgium, Absolutus are a nihilistic black metal band that has evolve from a traditional black metal sound to a more experimental ensemble creating eerie atmospheres and out of this world darkness. As a contemporary black metal release at 33 minutes this is a concise record. This really pays off as the band shows tenure and a great use of editing.

This is a very loud album and it felt as heavy and loud as black metal should be. The title song ‘’Pugnare in iis quae obtinere non possis’’ is a superb example and of their concise yet loud use of every element. The vocals by Abstrusus are vitriolic and infused with the right amount of nihilistic hate.

Being a black metal drummer myself I really enjoyed Jonas Sanders’ parts and I thought he did an excellent job while being present without over the topping with nice grooves and a perfect razor sharp timing in the blast beat sections. Interludes are not too frequent and balance with grandeur the violence of the music.
