COSTIN CHIOREANU – The Quest For A Morning Star

Music Review : Costin Chioreanu – The Quest For A Morning Star (2015, Avantgarde Music)

Written and recorded to raise funds for the victims of the Bucharest fire that happened on October 30 2015 at the Collective nightclub that killed 60 people and injured 151. The profits of this release will be donated to pay medical bills and funeral expenses of those who have been affected by the fire.

So the special guests are Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Mirai Kawashima (Sigh), Kimmo Helen (Hexvessel), Rune Eriksen, and Blasphemer (ex-MayhemAura NoirTwilight Of The Gods). They contributed to one or many chapters on this experimental/ambient album.
Each chapter is a soundtrack to a film or an exhibition; Chapter – I is the soundtrack to the Where Purgatory Ends exhibition comprising of ‘’Absent Abstract Above’’, ‘’An Empire Beneath Oblivion’’, and ‘’Phantasma and the Midnight Stalker’’. Then Chapter – II is the soundtrack for the Too Late For Rainbows exhibit with the more black metal oriented track ‘’Ihwaz’’. For Chapter – III, ‘’A Storm Shall Take the Words Away’’ was composed for the exhibition There Are No Shadows On Our Maps. Chapter – IV was the soundtrack for the art movie Outside The Great Circle with the same track title as the film. The final chapter, Chapter V was recorded for the presentation movie Magic As A Golden Mean Soundtrack titled ‘’Portals’’.

When a music is composed for a particular event or companion piece like art or film it is hard to not have experience both together and as much as the ambient yet experimental scale of The Quest For A Morning Star is grand, there is a limitation to our appreciation of the music alone.

This is a sincere piece of music that joined together with the great cause it carries,  demonstrates how Chioreanu can manage to create humbling and dreamy introspective music together with other metal musicians. His experiments are longing dedication to performances that do not need any words.
